Fire departments are not private enterprises. They're public services, paid for by our taxes - no different than police and public schools.

surferdude - read the comments before replying. First, Java was (and possibly legally still is) under GPL. It is/was open source. Anybody could use and distribute it for free. Furthermore, Google began developing Android long before Oracle bought the rights to Java.

Seriously? 60k? Where did you go, New York University or something? There are other good schools that are significantly cheaper. Between grants, scholarships, and low living expenses (living w/ parents) - my Arizona State University computer-science degree totaled maybe 5k.

It's not about a sense of entitlement. I know I deserve nothing. College students aren't depressed just because they're suddenly realizing that they need to work for the things they want. They're depressed because they're just now finding out that life sucks.

The only thing keeping me on Windows is games. It took a couple of years for someone to get Oblivion and Fallout 3 working in WINE, and last I heard Unreal Tournament 3 still doesn't work at all.

The average severity of a person's computer problems is proportional to their technical incompetence. If your computer was fast when you first got it and now it's slow, it's all your fault! Your computer doesn't deteriorate. It doesn't wear out and slow down over time.
